The trails are even more busy now with this amazing weather, which is even more opportunities for injuries. Please be safe out on the trail!

The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Department has temporarily closed Echo Canyon Trail at Camelback Mountain until further notice due to safety concerns caused by recent storms. The closure is necessary to ensure public safety while the City of Phoenix assesses the damage and determines next steps.

Park rangers will remain on duty to educate visitors about the closure and ensure the public stays off the trail until it is deemed safe to reopen.

The previous trivia question was ‘Who founded the idea for the Arizona Trail, which stretches from Mexico to Utah’

The answer is: Dale Shewalter

The Visionary Behind the Arizona Trail (link)

Long before the Arizona Trail stretched 800 miles across the state, it existed only as an idea in the mind of Dale Shewalter, a Flagstaff schoolteacher and avid outdoorsman.

In the mid-1980s, Shewalter imagined a trail that would connect Arizona from Mexico to Utah, weaving through deserts, canyons, pine forests, and mountain peaks. He began promoting the concept statewide — and even hiked the entire length himself in 1985 to map and document potential routes.

His passion inspired countless volunteers and led to the creation of the Arizona Trail Association (ATA), which continues to maintain and promote the trail today.

In 2011, the Arizona Trail was officially completed, and Dale’s vision became reality. He is remembered as the “Father of the Arizona Trail” — a man whose dream linked Arizona’s landscapes and communities through one continuous path.

Fun fact: The trail crosses seven national forests, four national parks, and three wilderness areas, showcasing nearly every ecosystem in Arizona.
